A case of mobile snatching in Chennai turned out to be 13-year-old boy’s thirst for education. The boy who studies in a corporation school snatched a phone so that he could attend online classes.
The 13-year-old, whose father works in a biscuit shop and mother is a domestic help, could not afford to buy a phone to attend the classes which have gone online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
When two criminals from the same neighbourhood saw him sitting idle during school hours, they decided to lure him with a mobile phone offer to make him join their snatching drive.
They wanted the boy to join them as involving a child would not let police suspect them and even if they were caught, they would be let off easily.
The trio stole the phone of a truck driver in Thiruvottiyur, however, they were caught and handed over to the police.
When Thiruvottiyur crime police inspector S Bhuvaneshwari heard the boy’s story during the investigation, she decided to buy a phone for him. She used the funds she had set aside to buy a phone for her daughter.
The child was let off with a warning.
