Assam: Youth dies after jumping into a river with 4 others to escape from police

A youth has died after he and four others jumped into a river to escape from police in Assam’s Nagaon district. According to reports, a police team chased Debasis and four others on September 12 when they were allegedly having intoxicants inside a temple.

When the police team chased the youths they jumped into Nishari River to escape the cops. Four youths had managed to reach other side of the river, but Debasis went missing. On Monday, NDRF and SDRF teams recovered the body of the youth from the river.

Meanwhile, local villagers have demanded that the district administration conduct an inquiry into the incident. Paban Hazarika, a local resident, said that the youths were spotted inside the temple and the police team had allegedly beaten them.

“The youths had jumped into the river, but Debasis had been missing since Saturday night. We don’t know at what condition the youths were spotted inside the temple. We appeal to the administration to conduct an inquiry into the matter,” Paban Hazarika said.
