Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the much-awaited Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, Himachal Pradesh.
Atal tunnel, which is the highest altitude tunnel in the world, will reduce the road distance between Manali and Leh, and the time about four to five hours. Since the 9-km long tunnel will reduce travel time to key border areas for the security forces and remain open throughout the year, it has great strategic significance.
Talking about the importance of the newly-built tunnel, PM Modi said, “Atal tunnel will give new strength to India’s border infrastructure. It is an example of world-class border connectivity. There have been demands to improve border infrastructure but for a long time, such projects either couldn’t get out of planning stage or got stuck midway.”
PM Modi further said, “Today, a dream of not only Atal ji but also of crores of Himachal Pradesh people has come true. This tunnel will reduce the travel time between Manali and Keylong by 3-4 hours. My brothers and sisters who live in the mountains know the importance of 3-4 hours in travel time.”
While addressing a public gathering at Atal Tunnel, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh dedicated the tunnel to the people of the country as well as the soldiers who man the Indian borders.
The area is going to see a major footfall of the tourists ,beside a socio-economic revolution . The strategic importance of the tunnel is already getting high attention as now forces and supplies can be routed from the Rohtang tunnel.
