The Mizoram Police, on Friday, registered an First Iinformation Report against the Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and six top Assam Police officials on charges of attempt to murder and assault. Marking an escalation in tensions simmering between the northeastern neighbours days after violent border clashes killed seven people, said the people aware of developments on Friday.
The FIR also accused Assam Police officers of initiating lathi charge and using tear gas on the civilians of Vairengte.
The Mizoram Police, in the FIR, have accused “200 fully armed” Assam Police personnel of attempting to “forcefully occupy” their police camp. They called it an encroachment of reserve forest.
The FIR came after the Assam Police issued summons to six senior officials in Mizoram and a legislator, reported NDTV. The police even visited the house of Mizo National Front MP K Vanlalvena in Delhi to serve the summons.
The FIR filed by Inspector of Vairengte police station, H Lalchawimawia, stated that the accused have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act and Mizoram Containment and Prevention of Covid-19 Act 2020.
Assam CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and others were asked to appear in the police station on August 1.
