In a sheer turn of events, police officer Poonam Khatri, who had earlier won the silver medal in the 2019 World Wushu Championship, has now been upgraded to the gold after the initial winner, Maryam Haeshmi of Iran, was found positive for doping. The information was clarified by the Secretary-General of the Indian Wushu Association, Suhel Ahmed. This makes Poonam only the third Indian after Pooja Kadiyan and Praveen Kumar, to win a gold in the World Wushu Championships.
Earlier, in the tournament held in China, from 20 October, 2019 to 23rd October, 2019, Poonam was defeated in the finals of the 75kg category by her Iranian counterpart, Maryam.
