RUSSIAN DEFENCE CLAIMS IT FIRED SHOTS TOWARDS A ROYAL NAVY VESSEL; UK DENIES

Russian Defence Ministry announced that a border patrol fired warning shots towards HMS Defender after it entered the country’s portion of the Black Sea of the coast of Crimea. The Ministry also announced that a SU-24M also dropped four bombs on the ship’s course.

However, UK’s Ministry of Defence claimed that it was passing through Ukrainian territorial water and were following a peaceful passage in accordance to international laws. The incident took place near Cape Fiolent, on Crimean coast.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 from Ukraine, but Western powers like US and UK do not accept Russia’s territorial claim over Crimea. UK’s Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, said in a shipment that Russian authorities warned them of naval exercises being conducted in the vicinity of the Ship’s route, but didn’t fire any warning shots towards HMS Defender. He blamed Russia for spreading misinformation, and said a previous instance of Russia’s claim of ‘chasing out’ HMS Dragon was also false.
